On September 9, 2019, Alberton celebrated the grand opening of its new skatepark, designed and built by the prestigious team from Evergreen Skateparks! More than 100 attendees shared in the event, and although the weather predicted a 100% chance of rain, not a drop fell during the event and plenty of skateboarding, scootering, and BMX biking took place. Music and free food enhanced the atmosphere. Girls on Shred offered a pre-event and stayed throughout the afternoon, providing tips, encouragement, and equipment to all new skateboarders of all ages. Jeff Ament, Pearl Jam bassist and skatepark philanthropist, also gave out tips—not to mention equipment and swag! Fun story: one youth was hedging on whether she wanted to give it a try. Mr. Ament walked up to her and told her he'd give her the skateboard in his hands if she went for it. She did, and has been hard at work at the skatepark practicing her newly found love ever since! PEAK would not be able to function without its hard-working volunteers, so here's a shoutout to everyone who worked so hard! This skatepark was funded with grants from the Tony Hawk Foundation, Montana Pool Service, Montana Skatepark Association, Washington Foundation in collaboration with Montana Rail Link, private funders, and various fundraisers. The process took three years of grant writing, fundraising, and planning to get to this point, but the efforts have been well worth it! Although the foundation and sod are laid, we still have plans to make this site even more beautiful. With a little more fundraising, future plans for this area include lights to allow nighttime use up until 9:00 PM, benches, picnic tables, and some permanent garbage cans, as well as a sign welcoming users and providing guidelines on how to be an ambassador of the park. If you'd like to show your support for these enhancements or help build a maintenance fund for the skatepark, click the Show Your Support Here button at the top of this page! We hope to see you at the park! BENEFITS OF SKATEPARKS Physical and Mental Health Benefits: Flexibility, endurance, coordination, and stress relief are all ways skateboarding helps an individual. Safe environment for skateboarding: Skateboarding in the street or on other people's property is dangerous and often illegal; providing a skate spot keeps the town looking nice and participants safer. Skateboarding allows those not interested in team sports to partake in a physical activity.
